Bausch Health Companies reported a fourth-quarter earnings beat on Tuesday. However , the stock's upside is likely limited until the legal battle over one of its most popular drugs is resolved. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of $869 million was up 5.6% versus last year and ahead of the $863 billion consensus estimate. That makes Xifaxan responsible for 38% of Bausch Health sales, excluding B+L. Breaking that down, $4.7 billion to $4.85 billion are attributable to Bausch Health (implying 2% to 5% organic growth), with $4.6 billion to $4.7 billion attributable to Bausch + Lomb.

A hotter-than-expected consumer price index on Tuesday sent stocks reeling, with the Dow posting its biggest drop in a year. Hang tight: You will receive BLCO shares — eventually. A carve-out occurs when a company sells shares in the separated unit into the open market via an initial public offering (IPO). A spin-off is when management distributes shares of the new company to exiting shareholders via a special dividend. A split-off gives existing shareholders the option to receive shares in the new entity in exchange for shares in the parent company. Eli Lilly not only reported a stellar second quarter, management was able to raise its full-year sales and adjusted earnings outlook as well. Though revenues were a tad short, earnings results were better than expected on a both a HAAP and adjusted basis. Constellation Brands' (STZ) sales and earnings results outpaced expectations. DuPont (DD) reported a good quarter prior to us initiating a position in the name. The company is in the process of being spun out from Bausch Health Companies (BHC.TO). Investors may get one share in the spun-out entity for every share of the parent company they owned. What's left of J & J will be focused on pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, which were responsible for over 84% of the company's total 2022 revenue of $94.94 billion. It underscores that once free of the parent company tethers a divested company can chart its own destiny. Those priorities may not have necessarily been wrong when considering J & J as the overall enterprise. We believe J & J and Danaher are poised to deliver two more examples.
The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. Here's an update on the health care and financial holdings in Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio we use at the CNBC Investing Club. At levels below $250 per share, Jim said Danaher is one of the most attractive stocks in the Club's portfolio. Its consumer-products unit will become a company known as Kenvue, while its faster-growing pharmaceutical and medical devices divisions will retain the J & J name. However, there is some litigation risk with J & J after a federal judge in January rejected its strategy concerning more than 38,000 talc lawsuits. Against that backdrop, we view J & J as a quality defensive name to own, especially given its annual dividend yield of around 3%.
